The Team

Name:  Brian Elliott

Age:  41

Location:  Salisbury, Wiltshire

Coaching Years:  Finally got round to doing my Level 1 before Christmas and will be managing South Wilts U13s this season.

Role in Rwanda:  Project Leader

About Me:  I gave up playing cricket a number of years ago due to injury.  In order to stay in the game I qualified as an umpire, which I thoughly enjoyed for a couple of seasons but then, as the demands of supporting my son’s cricket increased (40+ games a season) that also fell by the wayside.  I hope getting into coaching will be a way to stay involved in the game and also allow me to continue to meander around the boundary watching and supporting.  Really looking forward to working with the team in Rwanda.

Name: Jonathan Paul Todd

Age: 20

Location: Higham, Derbyshire, UK

Coaching Years: 6

Role in Rwanda: Sports coach and internet communications

About Me: Hi, I have always been interested in cricket from a very early age, as it is in the family blood. With my uncle (Paul Todd) playing professional cricket with Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan. When I first started playing cricket I never thought I would be coaching it too. I began coaching cricket at school when I was 14, learning the basics of coaching which upon leaving school I went to college to study activity leadership which enabled me to gain a basic coaching qualification to coach in primary schools. In 2008 I became a project development officer and a partnership coach for the Bolsover and District School Sport Partnership, and now I just coach at grass roots level as work prevents me from coaching full time now.

Name: Paul Jonathan Rowe

Age: 48

Location: Rhayader, Powys, Wales, UK

Coaching Years: 20

Role in Rwanda: Tutor and Press

About me: Cricket started wherever I could play, back garden, on the street under lampposts when it got dark, on the beach (living near Birmingham that was a challenge!).

Moved to Wales in 1973 and my junior career started at Llanidloes High School, before playing at senior level there then moving to hometown club Rhayader where I still play. Taken every role there is, many at the same time. Began developing junior sessions as part of club development, both at local and regional level. After completing Level 2 coaching was encouraged to take up Tutor role and support the development of coaches. The method of coaching the person and how to coach not the what, was a real eye opener for me.

As a part time youth worker and now youth service manager I have always had a interest in developing people to their potential.

Coaching Years: 5 from old qualification, 2 since Level 2 re-qualification

Role in Rwanda: Sports Coach

About me:

  • Cricket has always formed a large part of my family life, being involved with my village club Mersham Sports CC since school boy days, I have followed in my fathers footsteps as both Captain and longstanding committee member at the club.
  • Lots of family members are still heavily involved in the club, 2 sons both play cricket, one is level 2 coach, my wife is Club treasurer and my brother is Club Chairman to list a few.
  • My cricket career highlights are playing for the Fire service national team for 5 seasons in the late 1980’s – playing against other National service teams and some county 2nd XI’s.
  • I retired from Kent Fire and Rescue service in September 2009 as Station Manager after a 30 year career.
  • Having retired I now intend to try to do more cricket based projects while I am still fit and able – hence getting involved with CWB, and also I am setting up a Chance to Shine project in Ashford Schools for 2011 season, as well as being a member of the coaching team at the club.

Other hobbies include trying to play golf (handicap still above 20!!!), watching most sports, reading and travel.

Name: Ben Powis

Age: 20

Location: Winchester, Hampshire

Coaching Years: 6

Role in Rwanda: Coach and HIV/AIDS co-ordinator

About me: I am currently in my final year at the University of Brighton studying Sport Studies so I am taking some time off my busy university schedule of sleeping and playing Xbox to venture to Rwanda for a change of scenery from wonderful Eastbourne. My love of cricket started at a young age where I taught myself to bowl in the garden and started my beach cricket, sadly i haven’t improve much since then! I have played and coached for Fair Oak Cricket Club in Hampshire where I have learnt my cricketing skills from many wise heads since the age of eleven. I am now a qualified Level 2 coach so hopefully Rwanda will give me the opportunity to test my techniques in a completely different situation, there will be plenty of challenge but I am confident that Rwanda 2011 team will make cricket very enjoyable and get across the HIV/Aids message.
