Day 5 – Festival

Day 5 began in a way that no day has so far – with a bit of a lie-in.

After eating breakfast and getting plenty of coffee on board we set out to Camp Kigali for a 3 hour Rapid Fire bonanza where we welcomed 6 local schools, 4 primary and 2 secondary.

A well run morning of cricket went by in a flash with everyone involved – players, teachers & coaches – leaving Camp Kigali smiling from ear to ear – especially the tournament winners, the incredibly talented Camp Kigali Blue Skies.

The Blue Skies demonstrated their desire with a fantastic chant of “Discipline, Always!” as they marched onto many victories.

A short lunch break at Lamane Cafe was then followed by a trip to the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

The memorial and museum provided an eye opening 90 minutes into the most tragic event in Rwandan history. The stories told of loss and tragedy were felt by all of us, although it cannot be understated how important it is to understand what the people of Rwanda have been through.

In an effort not to end the day on too somber of a note we then travelled to Kinamba Community Cricket Project – otherwise known as the Meg Foundation.

This trip provided the morale boost that everyone needed as at least 80 children flooded in and enjoyed an hour of cricket, games and dancing.

We also had the joy of Ally McCreedy being reunited with Patrick, one of the two Rwandan children she sponsors.

Our time at the Meg Foundation was incredibly fun and provided an amazing contrast to our time at the memorial.

It came as a reminder that despite the tragedies that these people have endured, the future of Rwanda is incredibly bright as the Meg provides fantastic care for these children who are the next generation of the country.
