Day 9: (Kinihira Edition)  – Up, Up and away

After yesterday’s afternoon washout it was good to get back to it today. The team was split again and for me, Greg and Jono this meant an early start as we were off to Kinihira in the north of the country.

After a two hour drive through some of the most incredible scenery I’ve ever seen we arrived at our first stop, Kinihira school. We ran two sessions, one for the primary children and one for secondary, and both were a great success. A lot of the credit for this has to go to our Rwandan coaches as very few of the children in Kinihira speak English. Yesterday morning we had Eric, Landry, Diana, Zappy and Ivan who all helped a great deal. I was in charge of the crossfire station and we had some very competitive games whilst also being able to enforce those A B C T messages.

Lunchtime was a real treat for the team. Kinihira is home to many tea plantations and we were invited to one of these, Sorwathe for lunch at their guest house. The food was delicious but it was nothing compared to the view out over the valley which was simply staggering, as evidenced by how much of our lunch hour was spent taking photographs.

After lunch we were joined by Remy, who works at the tea plantation and has coached with CWB in the past. We headed to Kigali Parents School we were we ran relays for the primary children. These are always fun and today was no exception. The headteacher of this school loves his cricket and its clear that his enthusiasm has passed on to his pupils.

After all that it was time to hop back on the bus. Another long drive got us back to the hotel were the team reformed and went off in search of food. Special mention to Mr Mackett whose music selections were right on the money. Tomorrow the teams are swapping so that everybody gets to see Kinihira, which for me was one of the highlights of the trip so far.
