Day 3 – Crowd Control To Major Tom

Today’s blog brought to you by Kevin and Dan…

The day started at Kicukiro Primary with a session delivered to 120 kids, working in a very tight space the team stepped up to the plate. Strong work from everyone with maximum participation all round. Colvin and Williams found time to take part in a very Top Gun-esk volley ball session.

The second session of the day took place just the other side of the school building we’d started next to and this offered the team a lot more freedom as there was significantly more room, albeit a total dust bowl. Another 120 or so kids had a session rolled out to them with some great participation and as always, plenty of smiles, high fives and ABC’s. The lunch break took us a lovely little spot picked out by Eddie our driver, green gardens, a marquee overhead and last night’s dumplings making an appearance in the picnic bag. Perfect

The afternoon saw the group split again, with Team Colvin (Holly, Kevin, Adam, Clare, Eric & Jackson) revisiting Gahanga 2 Primary & Secondary school to continue the work from the previous day.

The session started well with the first group of 100 primary school children arriving near enough on time and completing a swift trouble free session through 5 different skill stations. The secondary school group then came out and started their session, everything was going well, but nothing could prepare us for what happened next. About halfway through the session a bell rang and the whole of the primary school (500+) flooded out and one by one our coaching stations were wiped out by this tsunami of small children. Not to be beaten we rounded them up and had the biggest ever Rwandan wave whilst chanting “CWB ABC”, video to follow… Whilst all this went on Jackson (guest Rwandan coach for the day) managed to continue sessions for the Secondary school all on his own, top work!

Great improvisation from the whole team to rescue the session from complete carnage and getting the CWB message to as many as possible.

Team Burton went back to Kicukiro for their afternoon session. We were a little early so had some time to explore the school. 3000 kids attend this school, we were definitely a distraction to them getting to class!! The sessions went well, with good numbers coming to see what CWB had to offer. There was a moment of slight madness towards the middle of our session when break time descended in its hoards. As per, team Burton remained unflustered. Massive numbers seeing the came of cricket and hearing the ABC chants.

The final session of the day was at the old favourite ROP. However not long after we’d stated the local football team arrived to train and we ended up cutting short. However, grass root sport is what we all love, so it was great to see the lads running around in the afternoon sun. We made our entertainment with human pyramids instead.

The champagne moment of the day, had to be a 21 year old ex street kid called Bishop. Bishop is a producer and a rapper and treated us to a few verses. The articulation with which Bishop described his journey from a street kid to going back to school was utterly amazing. The crowning moment of this was when we were at ROP, we showed them the video we’d taken and several of the kids knew Bishop 🙂 Amazing. We’re all looking forward to what tomorrow holds.
