Cricket background: Probably started when I was 7 or 8. I was lucky enough to play age group cricket for Scotland and managed to tour Australia with the Under 19s. Coaching is probably where I’ve had most success, culminating in winning the ICC Europe Young Coach of the Year. I’ve played for a variety of clubs but haven’t really played in the last couple of years. I’m open to big money offers for next season.
The lowlight is undoubtably : J Burton ct C Taylor b H Colvin.
Why CWB: I came across CWB about 4 years ago looking on the internet and found it appealed to my passion for coaching cricket and adventure. Its basically shaped my life since.
Growing up in Huddersfield has provided me with the ideal background for volunteering in developing countries, I have used this alongside my Level 3 cricket coaching to help take CWBs message to Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda.
This will be trip number 6 (or maybe 7) to Rwanda and as always I am looking forward to meeting old friends and seeing how the game is developing and helping to train the next generation of cricket coaches who will help to deliver the messages to the young about their future.
No doubt as always this trip will throw up memories that will last a lifetime from the heart breaking to the awe inspiring to the faintly ridiculous (see picture). Please don’t check on our Flickr page for the photo that shows me breaking the bike. I promise I fixed it.
Name: Katie Hanley, a summer baby of 1989
Role: Local Media
Nickname(s): Makosi, Ken, Kenya, Katie Kenya
Cricket: Well, I’d say I peaked with my cricket career at the age of 11 when I received county trials through the post. With a cricket player for a brother, there were certainly hours spent in the garden playing ‘garden cricket’. Every Saturday/Sunday during the summer, time is definitely booked off to go to wherever it may be to support the local team J Generally, sport plays a huge part in my life. THIS IS MY FIRST TRIP WITH CWB J After having had a few conversations about Holly’s CWB trips to Kenya and UG, I was sold on the experience straight away.
Africa: The most special place in the entire world!! Having taught sport & music and extensively travelled Kenya over the course of a year (including traumatic and bizarre bus journeys to Uganda), Africa certainly was a place I fell in love with and as a result, have been pining for it since the day I left.
I don’t like: the dark, raw tomatoes, olives (yuk!)
I love: sport, singing and CHOCOLATE. Coral is my favourite colour.
Name: Kevin Key
Role: Umpiring and scoring tutor
Nickname. None that I know of, but was know as “cake” at college.
Cricket Background. Played cricket at High School in Leicester (a long time ago!) and actually managed to get a junior trial at Leicestershire CCC. Played until the age of 16/17 but then found other sports and pastimes… I returned to cricket just over 10 years ago when my eldest son took up the game at a local club, as is always the case the club needed parents to help out, and as i already had my level 2 football qualifications, it was decided i should get some cricket qualifications also. Since then I have moved to my local club (Eastbourne CC) where 5 years ago I set up and coached the girls cricket section, which has now become the Womens & Girls section as the girls have got older! I am still actively involved in this and now have the glorious title “Women’s & Girls Co-ordinator”, with this section of the club being one of the most successful in recent years.
CWB experience etc. This will be my fourth CWB project (all in Rwanda), having first been in 2008 and every two years since. I first came across CWB when i received an e-mail from one of the trustees (Andy Hobbs) which he had sent out to all coaches in Sussex back in 2008 and thought it sounded an interesting concept so gave it a go and haven’t regretted it one bit.

– I’ve played cricket since I was about 13. Top order bat, occasional bowler. My teams now are Marston Green CC, West Midlands Police Veterans CC and West Midlands Police CC. I also have a international cap (the closest I’m going to get anyway!) for Rwanda after being asked to play (to make up the numbers) in a game of a Rwanda Select XI vs Rwanda U19…. I got a first baller!
– This is my second CWB and second trip to Rwanda. I first saw CWB on Twitter and the rest is history…

Cricketing credentials. Very few actually. I’ve been playing cricket to an exceptionally rural standard for 40 years without really getting any better! Amazingly I did manage to score my one and only ton a few years ago, and I think I was only dropped a few times. Oh and I was bowled but the bails weren’t dislodged. I am a bowler of last resort if some wickets need to be bought, or the opposition need to be fed a few runs. However I am a very good social secretary for my club, W G Gracefully of Isfield, East Sussex.
Likes and dislikes. Love Guinness and Marmite, hate cauliflower and jobsworths.
Why CWB? Love Africa, love cricket, came across CWB earlier this year and, well I didn’t have a choice, did I?
Name: Clare Ross
Role: HIV and AIDS monitoring
Nickname: Rossy, Rossifer, Rossington…equally imaginative things on that theme.
I like most sports, but knew I was on to a winner when I discovered cricket…a sport that stops in the middle for food! I have flaunted my specialist fielding ‘talents’ at various clubs, always meeting great people and having loads of fun.
My experience of CWB has been no different. After going to Uganda last year, I can’t wait for my second trip…
Name: Dan Williams
Role: Team Welfare
Nickname: I’m sure people call me a few things…
I was roped into playing cricket by Adam at about 14/15 feeling very much like I was cheating on football.
I’ve always played for the Price of Wales CC who then merged with Four Oaks Saints. I’ve had the odd appearance for the West Midlands Police Vets too.
I captained a side for 2 seasons after the merger. Loved it.
Cricketing career highlights include opening the batting with Dean Headley at the Lords nursery ground and getting a fist bump for hitting a six into the pavilion. The guy bowling was our sales director, so I don’t think it did my career any favours.
This will be my first trip with CWB and I can’t wait!!! I already feel like I’ve caught the bug…
And finally me…
Name: Greg Mackett
Role: Blogger, Snapper, IT technical support and bus DJ
Nickname: Mac, GMac, BigMac, Mac daddy, Maco, Macaroozer, Receiver, Receder, Harmy (wayward bowling), Stevie or Ray (reference to bowling like a blind man whilst wearing my sunnies), Tredders, Downes, Barbie and quite regular am greeted on the phone to screams of “I’m a Mackett man” to the backing of Elton John’s rocket man.
Cricket background: I can’t remember a time when I didn’t play cricket. Either i’ve been playing a long time or the Alzheimer’s is getting worse. My most spectacular moment on a cricket pitch came at the expense of my teammates rear car window, unfortunately I wasn’t the batsman just the bowler who decided to bowl a shocking slower ball to a man on 98 who kindly dispatched it.
I joined the ranks of CWB last year with an autumn trip to Rwanda and fell in love with not only the land of a thousand hills but also the work that CWB does.
welcome to Rwanda looking forward to your visit ,
Iceman???!!!!????
Best of luck team – you’re going to have an amazing time.
