Joseph, the most efficient local sports co-ordinator, arranged for eight primary and two secondary schools to be ready for prompt start at 8.30am. So we hauled ourselves out of bed just after six o’clock to finish packing, breakfast, load the bus and ensure that everything was ready for the tournament and the drive back to Entebbe.

Thanks to Joseph (pictured below with other PE teachers) the event went like clockwork. All the teams arrived on time and we had plenty of space for the five pitches. There were clear group winners and the semis and finals were close and competitive. There was also time for a couple of friendly games.

In nominative symmetry Kapchorwa Primary School won the primary competition and Kapchorwa Secondary School won the older event.

We were all done and dusted by 11.30am and our driver Joseph reckoned with a six hour drive we’d be in an Entebbe bar by teatime.

They take tea late in Uganda!

Word went out to every road worker, police officer, traffic jammer, marker stall holder and truck saboteur that CWB were on the road and looking forward to an evening drink. This could not be allowed to happen! We were pulled over for licence and insurance checks, stuck behind tortoise drivers, had to work around broken down lorries and myriad street sellers and were delayed by several accidents. We seemed to hit every single pot-hole between Jinja and Lugasi in what’s known as an African Massage and eventually got to the VIa Via hotel at 10.30pm. Despite Joseph’s most careful driving, eleven hours in a bus it a long, humour sapping trip. The final straw as a “computer says no” conversation at reception which scatted the team across the site. Alice disappeared to her glamping tent, most of the others hit their rooms and only Jim and Mark made it to the bar.

It wasn’t all bad however. Along the way we were able to meet up with old CWB friends Oxy and Moses.

These conversations were all too brief but did allow us to find out what’s happening with the local coaches. There’s lots of development work, enthusiasm in the schools and promotion of women and girls cricket. The pressures, as ever, are a lack of equipment and cash and not enough hours in the day. Cricket is growing in Uganda thanks to a huge amount of work on the ground but the toil is hard and the workers are few. We must continue to support them.

Jim

After a busy couple of weeks the last thing we needed was an early start…

Read the postA Swift Festival and a Loooong Drive

[1
