Day 9 – kumi festival by tarn

Tuesday morning arrived and with it our last day in Kumi which we finished off in traditional CWB style with a festival.

4 Primary schools competed at rapid fire and 3 high schools played a pairs cricket competition.

It was great to see the players improving in confidence and take on the coaching points we had worked with them on in our time at the schools.

The captains for rapid fire took charge of their teams and positioned them for maximum tactical impact when fielding which was great to see.

The secondary schools started off unsure about calling runs in their batting pairs when we first worked with them but by the end of the festival they were communicating so confidently it was a pleasure to witness the development.

In the meantime Ivan finished off the ICC foundation course with some of the teachers. They were all super enthusiastic and couldn’t wait to put their new found knowledge and skills into practice. One of the other teachers was inspired and said she wanted to start coaching too so I put her in touch with Keere cricket academy lead coach Tembo to see how to get her involved.

After the festival myself and Alex went for lunch at one of the local coaches houses while the rest of the team headed for a look at the Kumi rock paintings. We were given such a warm welcome and some delicious traditional food including Matokee which is a  savoury type of banana and a firm favourite with the group (think the best mashed potatoes you’ve ever had).

Onwards then to Mbale which is the last city on our itinerary where very excitingly we have a swimming pool in the hotel, hooray!
