After fuelling up with breakfast at our hotel, we headed out for our second day of coaching in Kumi. Today we were going to be working with three secondary boarding schools.
We first arrived at Wiggins School. Since it was a Saturday, the children were relaxing and not in class, and so we hoped to get them involved with some cricket. However, they were all playing football…
Unfazed, the CWB team got their equipment ready and got a small cricket game going. Slowly but surely, numbers grew and we had over 100 children playing and enjoying the game by the end. The coaches emphasised how cricket is a game for all and it was great to get a photo with all the women to celebrate International Women’s Day. It was particularly great to hear a girl very excitedly say to Coach Ivan that because of the cricket today, it was the first time she had ever celebrated International Women’s Day.
At our second school, Bishop Maraka, it was excellent to work with Gertrude, a coach who the CWB team met in Kumi last year. She has since gone on to complete her ICC Foundatuon Coaching course and now helps coach children in the local area.
Finally, at Bishop Ilukor Girls Secondary School, we had some fun with a fantastic group. We also had the opportunity to look around the school. There was a fantastic energy there, since the parents had come to visit, and some excellent performances from the children provoked some reflection from the CWB team on their own lack of singing and dancing skills.
After a tasty lunch at Coram Deo Cafe, a local Korean-owned restaurant, the team headed to Lake Bisina, which had been recommended by our Ugandan coaches. It was a lovely setting at the lake, and we enjoyed playing catch with some local children – as we left they were still passing around the tennis ball we gave them which was great to see.
The team then returned back to the hotel for a well deserved rest and dinner, before our day off tomorrow, where we will be visiting the nearby Sipi Falls.
Overall, it was a fantastic day and it was great to share the message of inclusivity through cricket, especially on International Women’s Day.
