At Cricket Without Boundaries, we believe that sport can do even more: it can help young people grow into confident, caring and capable leaders within their own communities.

That is why Positive Youth Development sits at the heart of everything we do.

Cricket as a Platform for Life Skills

CWB programmes use a player-cantered coaching philosophy alongside cricket games and activities deliberately designed to nurture the “whole person.”, from developing communication and cooperation to lateral thinking and managing pressure we are aiming to develop them as future changemakers with ideas, talents and voices that deserve to be heard.

Our approach is guided by the “6Cs” of Positive Youth Development – Connection, Confidence, Competence, Character, Creativity and Caring. We design activities that bring these themes to the forefront, while investing in developing our coaches not just as technical instructors but as mentors, facilitators and positive role models. The PYD framework gives them practical tools to create safe, inclusive and enjoyable environments where every young person can thrive.

Empowering Young People to Lead

In many cricket communities, adolescents are rarely asked for their opinions. PYD-based coaching changes that dynamic, shifting the focus from “doing things for young people” to “doing things with young people.”. Sessions are designed to encourage participation, decision-making and problem-solving. Players are invited to set goals, reflect on challenges and support each other’s learning.

Perhaps the most exciting part of PYD is how it connects cricket to issues that really matter in young people’s lives. In different countries, CWB programmes integrate conversations about locally relevant topics such as:

gender equality

health and wellbeing

education

inclusion and disability

conflict resolution

HIV awareness

Because these discussions happen within trusted cricket environments, they feel more accessible. Young people who might not engage with a formal workshop are willing to participate when learning is combined with fun games and supportive relationships. PYD then provides a springboard for youth-led change – players organise clean-up campaigns, advocate for girls’ participation in sport, or share health messages with their peers.

A Shared Language for Collaboration

None of this happens in isolation. CWB programmes work hand in hand with local cricket associations, teachers, NGOs and community leaders. PYD provides a common language and shared purpose. By training local coaches in PYD principles, we help create sustainable change that continues long after international volunteers have gone home. Communities are empowered to use cricket in their own way, to address their own challenges.

Download 6Cs PYD Playbook PDF

Cricket has always been more than just a game: it brings communities together, creates friendships,…

Read the postPOSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

[1
