HUye Day 2

Our second day coaching in Huye saw the team coach close to 500 children and squeeze in a slice of culture.

The morning saw us run hour long sessions in local primary schools before visiting a secondary school, coaching around 370 children in total across the 3 sessions.

At lunchtime we stopped for a buffet at the hotel one of our local coaches, Eric, is staying in. The morning sessions clearly took their toll on one member of the team…

The afternoon started with a visit the Huye Ethnographic museum which allowed the team to gain an insight into the history of Rwanda. Ali and Yolanda took the opportunity to try their hand at traditional weaving while browsing the many exhibits on offer. We also learned that the sessions delivered by the team on the previous day had been picked up by local parents. Our guide informed us that she had seen a photo of a CWB session we delivered the day before in a parents WhatsApp group and we had coached her 2 children. It was great to hear from a parent that the session was so positively received.

The final session of the day saw Ed and Nick take a deserved afternoon off. The rest of the team went to work on skills with a group of children our local coach Amiable already coaches. We expected around 30 children which was roughly the number coached by some of the team the previous night, however the actual number was in excess of 130 and forced the team to adapt quickly. The result was two stations covering technical aspects of bowling and keeping the ball down when batting, along with a third set up to correct bowling actions. It was fantastic to see these young cricketers improve significantly over the course of the session.

The team have settled in well to life in Huye and we’re looking forward to seeing what the rest of the week brings.
