This morning we said our goodbyes to Gillian, and left Bugesera and Kigali behind us, on the road south to Huye. Rwanda is stunningly beautiful, with wonderful views round every turn, but the land of a thousand hills is well named. It’s incredible that every available inch of the rich red soil is cultivated, with terraces cut into the hillsides to make the most of it. Working this land is tough work, all by hand, and it’s often the women who are out labouring in the fields, a real back breaking task.
A pit stop in Muhanga to pick up snacks also provided our birthday girl Amy with a more suitable hat for the afternoon’s coaching sessions, and after settling in to our new base in Huye she soon had a chance to show it off. Students at both our schools joined in enthusiastically to sing Happy Birthday, before we got started.
We got underway with a gentle session to warm up at Regina Pacis School of Tumba, before a more challenging time at GS Cyarwa, ending the day with the bus being mobbed as
If we were pop stars. The school is reached along a rough dirt road, so a quick escape isn’t possible, and we had an escort of kids running along beside us for about half all hoping for a tennis ball.
Time for the birthday celebrations, and we enjoyed a BBQ dinner with a beer or two……or three……finished off with Amy and Matt hitting the karaoke.
(Editor note – Thank you to everyone on the trip that made my birthday a special day, its certainly one I won’t forget!
