What is believed to be the highest total for a CWB visit here was celebrated with a round of Mutzigs at the end of a hectic day.

Project leader Lee, who along with Audi and Eric deserves most of the credit reckons that a dozen visits ago the CWB team were coaching only a few hundred youngsters in a fortnight so the significance of this achievement can not be overstated.

Thousands of schoolchildren are being introduced to a game we all love and want to prosper here in Africa, and just as many are being given those vital HIV messages and reminded that good health and good sport go together.

This morning, on a much cooler day here in Huye, we again enjoyed the open spaces at Cywara School where we were able to play several games of crossfire and continuous cricket – always great favourites. Almost 250 children received coaching here.

That was in marked contrast to our return visit to Group Scolaire Butare Catholique and the “building site”. But a CWB volunteer will never be beaten.

A cancellation meant that we had some “down time” but we more than made up for it with our late afternoon visit – a first visit by CWB – to Regina Pacis School of Tumba where, in a couple of hours, we utilised excellent facilities to deliver coaching to 460 children in two non-stop sessions.

The cool day ended with darkening skies and an evening thunderstorm but there was an air of celebration and justifiable achievement among the volunteers as we met up for our evening meal.

Tomorrow it is the school festival and a chance to see what the youngsters of Huye have learned about the game of cricket.
