Day 6 – Into the foothills

An early start had the team on the road at 7.30 for a 2 hour drive to our final stop in Koshi Province, Udayapur.

Nearly all of CWBs work in Nepal is in the Terai the southernmost, lowland region, characterised by fertile, flat, alluvial land that forms the “granary of Nepal” due to its tropical climate and rich agricultural output.

Gaighat in Udayapur along with its nearby neighbour Dhankuta are the closest we get to the travel agents views of Nepal as both just get into the foothills of the Himalayas. Gaighat being almost exactly due south of Sagarmatha (Everest).

A day off tomorrow with Saturday being Nepals one day weekend may well see the team venture into the hills to see if we can catch a glimpse, with it being 8,848 metres high, how hard can this be?

Friday being a half day for Nepali schools meant that only 4 schools could be visited.

Although it is only a brief visit to Gaighat it was nice to keep a promise made a couple of years ago to coach Mithun who had travelled to take one of the face to face ICC Foundation courses run by CWB in Biratnagar.

He was one of the standout candidates on that course and it will be interesting to see how his work has impacted the region as Sara and I will be running an intro to hardball session for local girls tomorrow.
