Today
was a full on first day of coaching for Team Kenya. Across the full day we
covered more than 900 children and coaches, and 4 schools in the process.

Our first session was a great chance for the team to deploy all the skills we learn at the training weekend, and we really enjoyed teaching a wonderful group of boys and girls with mixed cricketing abilities. We finished with a 6-over match against a selected group of the school players, which sadly we lost (no fault at all going to Clampy getting hit for consecutive sixes, or Del missing numerous stumping/catch opportunities behind the wicket).
We then split the group up, with Matt joining Peter (Peter Ongondo, ex Kenya International) for coach training which involved training the next generation of local coaches. He enjoyed a hugely rewarding experience training some of the coaches who will be running ongoing Kisumu cricket sessions, and teaching them the skills they need to develop future Kenyan cricket stars.

The rest of the group continued on to St Paul’s School and what a greeting we had from the children aged 8-11. They learned how to bat, bowl , throw and catch – not bad for an hour and a half!
After lunch, we were hugely outnumbered at St Mark Nyabera Primary school but we took on the challenge and the kids learned that it doesn’t matter what field you have – as long as you have a ball and a bat then you can make cricket work and fall in love with the game!
Our final session was at Highway Comprehensive School where we taught over 100 children how to play rapid fire. A great way to end an amazing first day in schools!
Overall, we visited 4 schools, developed the cricket skills of almost 1000 children and brought into cricket 20 new coaches. Wow!
After a long and truly rewarding day, we returned to our hotel for a beer and a debrief, followed by a well-earned shower and dinner. Another big day awaits tomorrow.
