Today was our last day in Muranga we spent it helping run the annual Muranga Cricket Festival hosted at Ndera Primary School.
On route to the school we saw one team running down the motorway to get there on time, Other local schools walked, and some further away came by school bus.
5 schools attended: Kabati, Muranga College, Ndera, Mihango and Makuyu. Each bringing a girls and boys team of 10 players. Each team played 3 matches spread across 4 pitches.
As the festival was getting underway the coaches that were under the weather yesterday took some time out of the sun and did classroom work with the children of Ndera Primary School. Teaching them important lessons about kindness, respect and that cricket is a game for all.
The festival was an opportunity for the children to showcase their cricket skills learnt in PE lessons. The display of skills was fantastic. Across the whole morning there was some fast bowling, great catches in the field and some amazing batting. If we had boundaries there would have been lots of 4s and some 6s too!
The Ndera girls were particularly impressive, winning all 3 of their games. Mary’s bowling was fast and accurate. Unie and Ruth were on fire in the field with lots of catches and run outs. Lucy kept it tidy behind the stumps. The energy of the team was infectious too, dancing in the fielding and even Rahab dancing in the run up to bowl
We met Fabriza from Makuyu College. She has been playing cricket for 2 years after being introduced to the sport by CWB. It was her 2nd time at the festival. She like cricket because it improves her skills and you get to make new friends from other schools. Fabriza is so keen on cricket she was practicing her skills between games. She has aspirations to become a doctor and work in England and play cricket abroad.
The CWB team now have a 4 hour drive over to Nakuru where they will spend the next 2 days inspiring the school children in this new city.
