From Sleeping Beauties to Goldilocks

Early morning alarm calls, some at 2am and the team gathered from different parts of the UK by 6.30am in Heathrow. Bleary eyed but smiling and positive, everyone said how glad they were that the first day of our trip had finally come, some six weeks or so since the training weekend!

It’s been two and half years since I was last in Nairobi but it seems like a lifetime – the Covid pandemic affected both the UK and Kenya. I find myself wondering how our Ambassadors and volunteers have been impacted – I believe Mathias one of our Ambassadors suffered particularly badly. But throughout, the team have found ingenious ways of engaging with schools and young people including running Covid-safe activities when schools were closed and coming back to schools as soon as they re-opened.

No doubt the young people themselves have struggled without education or the joy of being with their friends. Im not sure what we will encounter over the next two weeks and no doubt there will be plenty of surprises. But we’ve got an enthusiastic team from the UK and Kenya and together we hope we can bring smiles, laughter and learning to everyone we meet.

We have a great team some of whom have experience of CWB projects and some of whom have committed themselves for the first time. After loading on the massive bags of bats, balls and other equipment we took off on time bound for Nairobi, arriving in the evening where to my utter surprise, having been handed my key card, was the gentlemen sleeping in my bed!

Roll-on Tuesday…….
