Day 2-Nicholas arrives, a mystery shopper experience, we meet Dave, and some very unKenyan restaurant service

Last night saw us experience a strange event at a local restaurant-the food we ordered arrived on the same day although we didn’t test them with exotic choices in the way that David Murray did last March when he had the audacity to order a fried egg! It will come as no surprise to the Leeds Trinity girls that Doctor Sams grand plan for ensuring everybody takes their Malerone fell at the first hurdle (his “take your tablet with your evening meal” approach relying too much on people remembering to take their tablet with them to said evening meal!) He has now revisedhis best practice advice to “just set a reminder on your phone”.

Anyway, today was a good day. Nicholas eventually made it to Kericho from Nairobi at 3-30 am, but was still first to breakfast! After tracking down the local monkeys in the garden, we loaded up, collected some water and were then greeted at the Kericho Teachers College by a very happy principal and proceeded to educate 60 of his finest trainees in the great game itself. They were so enthusiastic, quite skilled actually and flew through it with smiles on their faces. Newbies Sarah, Philip and Max stood back and watched for all of an hour before throwing themselves into the action and wont look back Im sure. Ducks to water and all that…..

Certificates and shirts were handed out,  40 of our new coaches visited our HIV/AIDS testing station,  and we were then ready to depart for Fountain Primary, when we were advised that an unexpected lunch was ready-beef stew (yes, Gary Shankland!) , rice and veg and as a result we were concerned that we were going to do the Kenyan thing and arrive late at Fountain and annoy the Principal there. We did indeed arrive late but the Principal was very chilled having himself enjoyed the mornings Coach Ed session, posing as one of the teachers there (the first mystery shopper we’ve had I think) and he sat resplendent in his T Shirt, clutching his certificate, so happy that we were going to introduce cricket to his school. We were initially given about 120 kids but having entertained them for the allocated hour and a half, in true CWB style we took about another 100 who were only supposed to be spectators and gave them 45 minutes of drills and some ABCs.

Great start to the trip and followed by a further shock as, not to be outdone, the staff at the Tea Hotel not only delivered our food on time but also delivered the dessert course before we had finished the mains. That came as a bit of a shock as did the pre-starter starter of Spag Bol (“necessary toprepare your throat for the Minestrone soup” we were told!

On to day three tomorrow and some orphanages in there somewhere which will be great. If you’re wondering who Dave is, he’s the first monkey Sam and I met this morning (his name must be Dave cos he looked round when we called to him…….

Cheers
