That first trip certainly challenged my perspective and whilst there, amongst other things I learnt what having nothing actually meant, I learnt how a little can go a very long way, I learnt that it is possible to make a difference in helping to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS and I learnt that we in the UK are capable of improving people’s lives in Africa, however little, in some way if we choose to. Primarily though, I also understood that once you have been to Africa and realised some of these things it is impossible not to care nor want to continue to help in whatever way you can – and that is the reason why I have returned with regularity since and am heading to Kenya again in October.

Since its inception CWB has achieved amazing things, and although personally I have only been involved with the charity for just over 2 years, I am extremely proud to feel a part of its fabled ‘family’. Cricket itself is a huge passion of mine and I play, having done so for 22 years, for Flitwick CC (‘The Mighty Otters’) in Bedfordshire. I have also captained the club for 5 seasons previously and hope again to draw on some of my experiences of captaincy in helping with the coordination of the trip. Away from cricket I am heavily into the arts, most other sports and like to think of myself as energetic, determined and always up for a challenge. This is perhaps best demonstrated by having previously completed 8 London Marathons…Although at the last attempt I was shamefully beaten by Tinky Winky from the Teletubbies which has since prompted my retirement from the event!

I literally cannot wait to get out to Kenya to meet old and new friends and to experience anew all the things that Kenya has to offer.

I anticipate a very special 2 weeks.

——————————————————————————————————————

Dave Gelling ( ECB Tutor )

I’m looking forward to my third CWB trip & returning to Kenya after visits to Botswana in ’12 & Kenya last year.
