TEAM KENYA
4TH-18TH October 2014
Carl Ferguson ( Team Leader )
When I signed up to go to Rwanda with CWB in 2012, although in principle I liked what the charity was trying to achieve in promoting positive HIV &AIDS awareness messages via the medium of cricket, I was unaware how it would have such a profound effect on my life afterwards and certainly wouldn’t have believed that only 2 years later I would be about to embark on my 4th trip to Africa. That first trip certainly challenged my perspective and whilst there, amongst other things I learnt what having nothing actually meant, I learnt how a little can go a very long way, I learnt that it is possible to make a difference in helping to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS and I learnt that we in the UK are capable of improving people’s lives in Africa, however little, in some way if we choose to. Primarily though, I also understood that once you have been to Africa and realised some of these things it is impossible not to care nor want to continue to help in whatever way you can – and that is the reason why I have returned with regularity since and am heading to Kenya again in October.
Since its inception CWB has achieved amazing things, and although personally I have only been involved with the charity for just over 2 years, I am extremely proud to feel a part of its fabled ‘family’. Cricket itself is a huge passion of mine and I play, having done so for 22 years, for Flitwick CC (‘The Mighty Otters’) in Bedfordshire. I have also captained the club for 5 seasons previously and hope again to draw on some of my experiences of captaincy in helping with the coordination of the trip. Away from cricket I am heavily into the arts, most other sports and like to think of myself as energetic, determined and always up for a challenge. This is perhaps best demonstrated by having previously completed 8 London Marathons…Although at the last attempt I was shamefully beaten by Tinky Winky from the Teletubbies which has since prompted my retirement from the event!
I literally cannot wait to get out to Kenya to meet old and new friends and to experience anew all the things that Kenya has to offer.
I anticipate a very special 2 weeks.

MOST OF MY LIFE IS EITHER SPENT AT WORK OR RUNNING THE KIDS AROUND BUT IN THE SPARE TIME I DO GET SATURDAYS IS CRICKET.
FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS I HAVE BEEN THE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OFFICER FOR PORTSLADE CRICKET CLUB SO THIS IS WHERE YOU WILL FIND ME ON A SATURDAY MORNING. IN THE AFTERNOON I PUT ON THE WHITES AND HELP PEOPLE IMPROVE THEIR BOWLING AND BATTING AVERAGES. THIS IS NOT THROUGH MY COACHING BUT BY EITHER GIVE THEM A EASY WICKET OR FEEDING THEM SOME EASY RUNS BY THROWING DOWN A FEW PIES.
UNFORTUNETLY I AM NOT TOP OFF THE CLASS WHEN IT COMES TO ABILITY WITH THE BAT AND BALL BUT COACHING I LOVE.
OUTSIDE OF CRICKET I ALSO ENJOY GOLF AND FOOTBALL AND SUPPORT THE MIGHTY “LEEDS UNITED FC”
WELL THAT IS ME AND TO SAY THAT I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS TRIP IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST UNSTATEMENTS EVER

John Haines
Here is the lowdown on me!
Name: Jon Haines
Nickname Ainer, Hainsey (and a few unprintable ones if you have been on my pre-season training)
Team Role; Project Accountant! (Ok in charge of kitty)
I have played cricket for Goatacre CC since I was 9, so that’s almost ** years and still playing, many high points in the game from my first senior game at the age of 10 to playing at Lords in the National Village Knockout Final and two massive sixes into the Mound stand (unfortunately off my bowling!).
I have been a cricket coach for 15 years starting at my home club where I still lead the junior and senior coaching and I have also coached various County boys age groups and I am currently the Wiltshire Girls U13 Lead coach and the Wiltshire Academy Manager.
Have toured many countries with cricket, my favourite country being South Africa, but Kenya promises to be something else. This is my first CWBA trip and I am really excited to be going to such a fantastic country and cannot wait to start coaching with the rest of our great team.

Daniel Pledger ( Returning Volunteer )
I’m a 24 year old university graduate from Scarborough. I presently work in a factory whilst trying to save for a masters degree.
This will be my second CWB trip after a fantastic fortnight last year in Uganda. I first got involved with CWB because it combines 2 of my passions, travel and Cricket, and also allows me to make a difference to people’s lives along the way. HIV is something that needs to be prevented, and the staggering statistic that 1 person dies every 17 seconds from an AIDS related illness sums it up for me
Unlike many of the team I do not have any formal coaching qualifications, however the training weekend and my experiences last year mean I will be in a great position to hit the ground running with our brilliant team!

Colette Gooding
So last summer I knew nothing about cricket apart from that often people wear white and it seems to go on for days when I started a work placement up at ICC Europe Lords. Where I meet Andy who spoke to me about CWB and the work they did. I thought I would give it a go a see what happens.
A year on I am going to Kenya and have just learnt how to bowl and bat. I have always been sporty so why not another challenge. From a previous trip to Africa I have always said I would go back and give something back, after travelling to several other places in the world there is nowhere quiet like it.
Cant wait for Kenya1 2 weeks 🙂

Clive Hawthorn
Hello All,
My name is Clive Hawthorn, I’m as old as my tongue and a little older
than my teeth (43 in reality).
I live in Brighton, although I am rarely there during the week as my
job involves travelling all around the British Isles and sometimes a
little further afield.
I am a keen, although not the most gifted, cricketer (wicket-keeper
and batsman) and “attempt” to play league cricket in Sussex for
Ditchling CC and friendly Sunday cricket for Brunswick Village CC.
I first heard of CWB through a team mate at Ditchling who had
previously volunteered on trips to Kenya and Botswana. Although it
really interested me it took me a few years before I managed to get my
act together and get involved..
This will be my first trip with CWB, and also my first trip to Africa.
