Every day on a CWB trip brings up new and exciting challenges and today was no different.
After yet another splendid breakfast we set off to school, approx. 1 hour from the Botswainian capital, Gaborone. Unfortunately we were not joined by “DJ” Carl * on the bus this morning due to other commitments with the British High Commissioner. However we were lucky enough to be joined by 4 coaches from the Botswana Cricket Association, which included 3 members of the Botswainian Under 19 ladies team. (* = Hits from the 80’s and 90’s)
The morning session at the school involved coaching 24 teachers from 7 schools in the area, with a particular highlight being the 3 Botswainian girls providing excellent introduction speeches on why they love cricket and what opportunities it has given them.
The introduction to batting and bowling was expertly undertaken by the Oslo based duo of Tim and Dave. Obviously their experience and successes from cricket in near the arctic circle put them in a strong position to provide a quick tutorial on the key elements of cricket in the heat of Africa!
After taking a break for lunch, which – due to delays – comprised of liquorice allsorts and a chocolate chip cookie, we moved enthusiastically onto the afternoon sessions with the kids.
Today was by far our busiest day with over 160 children attending in the afternoon, many of whom were bussed in from outlying schools. Our team motto of “The more the merrier” stood us in perfect stead to ensure that we were able to provide both a fun packed cricket afternoon, and ensure we focused on providing the serious ABC (T) message of HIV/AIDS awareness.
This was the hottest day of the trip thus far, and the number of rolled up sleeves resulted in the a competition for the “Guns of Gaborone”, with no significant winner.
Signing off from another brilliant day in Botswana……
